About using garage floor paint and how to easily apply it
A garage offers optimal protection for cars, scooters, bicycles, etc. Materials or tools are often also stored here. The demands on the purely functional rooms are high and the floor has to withstand a lot over the years. The weight of the vehicles, plasticizer in tires, tar from the road, dirt, moisture, road salt in winter and abrasion are just some of the stresses that the subfloor has to deal with. To protect it from the challenges mentioned and to make it easier to maintain, there is special garage floor paint.
What exactly is garage floor paint?
A garage offers optimal protection for cars, scooters, bicycles, etc. Materials or tools are often also stored here. The demands on the purely functional rooms are high and the floor has to withstand a lot over the years. The weight of the vehicles, plasticizer in tires, tar from the road, dirt, moisture, road salt in winter and abrasion are just some of the stresses that the subfloor has to deal with. To protect it from the challenges mentioned and to make it easier to maintain, there is special garage floor paint.
In contrast to pure concrete paint , the heavy-duty floor coating makes garage floors more resistant, resistant to plasticizers, more resilient, non-slip and oil-resistant. Water penetration is also prevented and dirt can be removed more easily with the paint. For many, the visual design of the garage floor also plays an important role, because the floor coating can be chosen in a suitable cement color such as light gray or silver gray. You also determine the degree of gloss of the cement color. This determines whether the incoming light is absorbed or reflected. Depending on this, the floor appears matt (dull, satin, matt) or glossy (satin, glossy, high gloss).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of paint coatings for garages?
Advantages
The special paint increases the lifespan of garage floors. The coating also makes the surface much easier to maintain. The formulation, which is tailored to cement screed and concrete, ensures that the garage floor is more resistant to plasticizers, impacts and scratches and repels liquids such as water, oil, de-icing salt, alkalis, chemicals, acids and petrol.
If you decide to paint your garage floor, you don't have to be a professional. The garage paint can be easily applied to the concrete floor using standard painting accessories.
and impresses with its high coverage. It can be used immediately after the drying time.
Disadvantages
There are hardly any disadvantages. Only the preparation of the floor can be a little more extensive. Depending on the condition of the garage floor, it must be cleaned, sanded and pre-treated with a primer. Only then can the garage paint be used. However, if you accept this minor disadvantage once, you will be able to enjoy your garage floor for longer with the floor coating.

How long does the floor last with garage floor paint?
In contrast to concrete paint, garage floor paint is applied to the garage floor like a protective layer. It usually consists of two components. The so-called 2K floor paints contain epoxy resin and are water-based. They form a mixture of paint and coating. The one-component garage sealer is easier for laypeople to use and also forms a solid surface. Above all, it is important to use high-quality paint. This way, the coating will protect your garage floor for many, many years.
How to paint your garage floor in 3 easy steps

1. Cleaning & Preparation
Before you start, the garage floor must be thoroughly cleaned. The next steps can only be carried out when the concrete floor is free of oil, free of any contamination and dry. You can remove coarse dirt with a broom, and oil stains can be treated with a special cleaner.
Then check the garage floor for strength and absorbency. If the top layer comes off when you tap it gently, you will need to sand down the old coverings or old paint before you apply the renovation paint. Don't forget to clean the floor again afterwards and remove any imperfections and cracks.

2. Water test & primer
To do the water test, pour some water onto the surface and observe how much the liquid is absorbed. If the floor quickly turns dark, a primer should be applied before painting the garage floor.
If you are applying garage paint for the first time, we recommend treating it with a primer beforehand. If you have a new, very smooth concrete floor, the concrete surface must be roughened with an eccentric sander and treated with a 2K bonding agent before the new coat is applied. The first treatment must dry for up to 48 hours before the paint is applied.

3. Paint application & drying time after final coat
The next step is to apply the garage floor paint. For mineral surfaces, a test coat on a small area is recommended. To do this, simply use a lambskin roller or a brush. Apply the paint in even strips one or two times (for old and renovation paintwork) with the lambskin roller towards the garage door. For new paintwork, two to three coats are necessary. A drying time of 12 hours should be observed between coats. After the final coat, the paint is ready for use after seven days of drying time.
Frequently asked questions about garage floor paint
In addition to using the paint for garage interiors, it is also suitable for basement floors, workshops and carports.
If you want to renew your concrete paint, it usually makes sense to remove the old garage floor coating. Epoxy paint for the garage can be removed with chemical paint strippers or with a sander. The latter is the most common method and is also environmentally friendly. At the same time, the floor is perfectly prepared for the new paint.
Garage floor paint is now available in almost every RAL color imaginable: from gentian blue, iron gray, leaf green and tomato red to moss green, fire red, sky blue and rapeseed yellow to platinum gray, concrete gray and terracotta.
