Floor paints as floor coverings: advantages, areas of application, tips & more

Subsurfaces have to withstand a number of challenges every day. Sometimes the loads are extremely high. With special floor paints you can make mineral subsurfaces more durable and easier to clean. Depending on the type of floor and how it is used, different floor paints are suitable for painting. If, for example, you want to paint concrete from basement and garage floors, you can choose between 1K and 2K concrete paint . Wooden floors, on the other hand, require special water-based wood paints, which often come in natural colors.
What are the advantages of floor paints, how does the color affect the room's appearance, what do I have to consider with garage floors and how are the paints used? You can find all of this information here!

About the advantages of floor paints

Floor paint is ideal for making floors robust and durable with a protective coating. Floor paint is abrasion-resistant, resistant to chemicals and is ideal for basements, garage floors and even laundry rooms. Floor paints can also be used in workshops and storage rooms. Floor paints are easy to apply and paint. You can use paint rollers or brushes for this. They protect floors, but also walls and other surfaces from heavy wear, weather, dirt, dust and liquids such as oils.

Lively rooms thanks to colored floors

Floor paint is available in many colors and in different shades of gray especially for concrete floors. This means that surfaces can be given a new look - and without the effort you would have to put in when laying tiles, for example. Concrete paint is available in the typical RAL colors such as concrete gray, gentian blue, leaf green, fire red, moss green, iron gray, rapeseed yellow, pure white, platinum gray, terracotta, tomato red, anthracite gray, sky blue and light gray - here you can go according to your personal taste and choose your desired color. The only important thing is to use special floor paint for concrete floors and cement screed. This is also functional in that it prevents moisture from penetrating after painting and drying and is abrasion-resistant.

The colors of wooden floors are based on the color properties of the wood species. Floor paint is intended to specifically emphasize wood colors and grains. The surfaces made of natural materials as well as wooden stairs and wooden furniture are protected from environmental influences and wear and tear with the special paint.

effect of light and dark floors

Dark colors work particularly well in large rooms and make them look classy and elegant. Light colors make rooms appear larger and appear longer. Dark furniture as a contrast creates a harmonious image.

It is important that the floor coating is considered right from the start when planning the room. Ideally, the floor, wall and ceiling colors should match each other and together create a harmonious overall picture.

Which floor paint is suitable for concrete floors?

The floor paint is chosen depending on the application, as there is no floor paint that can be used equally for all surfaces and surfaces. It is important to remember that garage floors are subject to greater stress than basement floors. While the floor paint here has to be abrasion-resistant, this is of secondary importance for wall paints, for example. Color intensity and coverage also play a major role.

Floor paint forms a floor coating on the subfloor that protects against dust, oil and other dirt. Floor paint can be easily applied with a paint roller and brush and is usually available to buy ready-to-use.

When it comes to concrete paints, you can choose between 1K and 2K concrete paints (epoxy resin concrete paints). 2K consists of two components that only react with each other when they come into contact. Concrete paint based on epoxy resin appears as a satin-gloss floor coating after painting. Epoxy resin is particularly hard-wearing, easy to care for, dries quickly and has a long shelf life. 1K concrete paints are one-component, ready-to-use systems that are easy to apply and quick-drying, but are less resistant to chemical and mechanical stress.

The right floor paint for indoor use

Water-based floor paints are well suited for indoor use. When buying, you should look for the "Blue Angel" seal, which tells you at a glance that the concrete paint is a water-based emulsion paint that is suitable for indoor use. So-called silicate paints are recommended. The high pH value prevents mold, is easy to spread and is harmless to health.

The right floor paint for outdoor areas

The paint has to withstand a lot more outdoors. For walls and facades, biocides are usually added to the paints to protect the surface from mold and fungus. Therefore, they should only be used outdoors. Acrylic-based floor paints form a weather-resistant layer. These are ideal for use on concrete walls. Epoxy resin has proven to be effective for coating floors outdoors. The two-component paint makes the concrete waterproof and reliably seals garage floors, basement floors, etc. Whether normal concrete paint is sufficient or whether you should use 2K paints based on epoxy resin depends entirely on the load. You can usually find information about this on the product label or in the product description.

Which floor color is suitable for the basement?

Basements require a floor paint that is abrasion-resistant, moisture-resistant and easy to clean. For normal basements, water-based cement and floor paints are well suited. However, if your basement has a heater and you want to cover the floor with a floor coating, you must use an oil-resistant paint according to regulations.

Special features for floor coating in the basement

There are guidelines that apply to boiler rooms that you must follow when coating the floor: The floor paint for the basement must be oil-resistant, applied in three coats and visible in the upper part of the wall. This means that you choose a gray layer for the first coat, a blue tone for the second coat and a gray layer for the third coat. The colors appear in a fan shape on the wall and overlap.

Painting indoor and outdoor floors yourself

To ensure that floors inside and outside look their best after the color tones have been applied, you should follow our tips below to enjoy the floor coating for many years to come. Before you start: If you want to work on surfaces outside, pay attention to the weather, humidity and temperatures. To ensure that drying goes smoothly, it should not have rained for at least three days in a row and the temperature should not have fallen below 10 °C during the day or at night.

Preparation

When painting, you first need to differentiate whether it is a new or an old concrete floor. If you have just laid a floor with cement, it must be completely hardened and dried before you can paint it. Depending on the environmental conditions, it can take up to 8 weeks for the cement to harden completely.
Before applying the floor coating, it is important to clean the floor thoroughly and remove any old paint. Sanding the floor indoors and outdoors is a good way to remove any paint residue. Then tape off everything that is not to be painted.
Tip: If the surface is already heavily worn and may even have holes and cracks, add an intermediate step and smooth the floor before applying the primer. Concrete filler or epoxy resin mortar are suitable for this. You can use a spatula to seal cracks and large holes quickly and easily before applying the primer.

primer

Once all preparatory measures have been completed, the primer is applied with a rubber squeegee or brush. After priming, the subsequent coating will last longer and the colors will be more intense. Apply two coats of primer if you feel that one coat is not enough and the durability will be increased. The primer should now dry for around 24 hours. The primer should generally be dry, but not completely hardened.

painting

Once the primer is dry, it's time to apply the floor paint. If you've chosen a 2-component version, mix the two parts according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then grab a paint roller or brush and paint the floor in one go. It's advisable to apply a second top coat after the first coat.
