One-component sealant - Ready to use

What is a sealant?

A sealant can be used to seal all kinds of leaky spots. Many homeowners or mobile home owners know the problem - a gutter is leaking or there is a hole in the surface and the next time it rains, it drips. With a sealant, such spots can be easily sealed so that it stays dry again.

However, a distinction should be made between different materials. A very well-known sealant is silicone, which is usually used to seal joints and in bathrooms and kitchens and is applied using a cartridge. However, silicone is not ideal for some applications, especially outdoors. There are special sealants based on plastic fibers or polymer binders that enable better adhesion properties on different substrates such as plastic, natural stone, concrete, wood or metal.

What can sealants be used for?

A one-component sealant such as BAUFIX Multi-Dicht has a wide range of applications to repair leaks, for example:

sealant for bushings

DIY enthusiasts know the problem: you run a pipe through a wooden board, through metal or through another material and a small gap remains between the pipe and the recess - enough for water and moisture to get through.

A sealant helps here by sealing the passage around the pipe and thus preventing moisture from penetrating.

sealant for gutters

Hardly any homeowner is spared from it - the dripping gutter. But how can you seal a hole or a crack in the gutter? A waterproof sealant can be applied to the inside of the cleaned gutter to make the repair. Then the dripping will be a thing of the past for the time being.

sealant for connection points

When doing DIY, there are often connection points between different materials, for example when laying roofing felt. These points also have to be sealed so that no water penetrates. Since materials on the roof that are exposed to the weather heat up, expand and contract again, it is important that the sealant used is permanently elastic in order to meet the high demands of outdoor use.

sealant for holes

Whether due to hailstorms, mistakes during processing or simply the ravages of time - at some point even resilient materials will develop holes that need to be sealed. A seal with high crack bridging capacity can also help with this outdoors.

How is sealant applied?

The application of sealant depends on the product. Silicone, for example, is applied differently than a polymer-based sealant such as BAUFIX Multi-Dicht.

In any case, make sure that the surface you want to seal is free of dust, dirt, contaminants, oil, grease or other separating layers. Before application, remove loose parts of the surface by brushing them well.

First, do a test coat on a small test area to check the sealant's adhesion and material compatibility. If everything goes well, you can start.

Apply the sealant in two layers using a brush or a short-pile velour roller. Make sure that you do not spread the sealant too thinly and it is best to apply two layers. You should wait a few hours between applying the two layers, depending on the processing temperature and humidity.

After about 24 hours, the coated surface is sealed and can be fully loaded. In any case, pay attention to the information in the processing instructions!

What do I need to pay attention to when using sealant?

If you use the sealant outdoors, make sure that it is UV and frost resistant and, if necessary, de-icing salt resistant so that it can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Good sealants should also be highly flexible or permanently elastic and able to bridge cracks. Some cracks and holes are too large for sealants to be easily sealed. Pay attention to the information on crack bridging in the instructions.

Also check whether the sealant is suitable for the surface you want to seal. Not every material is suitable for all surfaces.

Also make sure that you store the sealant properly. If you store it in the garage, the compound can break down during the next frost - so it's best to always store it in a cool, dry and frost-free place.

Clean your tools immediately after use. Some products can only be removed mechanically after drying, which can quickly render a brush or roller unusable.
