Gartenmöbel winterfest machen
1. Protecting furniture in sub-zero temperatures
Especially in winter, garden furniture is exposed to extreme weather conditions. To prevent the wood from suffering too much, you should make your garden furniture winterproof. Even if you don’t have space in the basement, garage or shed to store your garden furniture indoors over winter, this is irrelevant for many pieces – they are generally more robust than you might think. The best example is a wooden garden shed, which is exposed to the elements all year round. Below, we explain how you can make your garden furniture winterproof.2. How it works
There is no single “right” way to make your garden furniture winterproof. The correct approach depends primarily on the material of the furniture. While wood can be very robust – but doesn’t have to be – plastic is very sensitive to cold, whereas metal and polyrattan are again very resistant. We’ll show you how to properly protect your garden furniture for the winter.
3. Wooden furniture
Even though the ideal way to overwinter garden furniture is to store it in a dry shed, basement or attic, you can safely leave your wooden furniture outside over winter. Garden furniture is usually made from hardwood such as teak and can easily be kept in the garden or on the patio during the cold season. It is important, however, that the wooden furniture does not get wet. Covering it with a suitable tarp is therefore the best way to make your garden furniture winterproof. At the same time, you must ensure that the cover is not completely airtight, otherwise condensation can form underneath, which is harmful to the wood.
To ensure that overwintering outdoors does not damage your wooden furniture, you should not only make your garden furniture winterproof, but also care for it well throughout the year. Stains such as the BAUFIX Terrace and Garden Furniture Stain provide optimal weather protection. Untreated hardwood such as teak should be treated several times a year with a suitable care oil.

Making garden furniture winterproof: what about the garden shed?
A garden shed or wooden outbuilding often replaces a cellar or basement. To make sure your garden shed weathers all seasons well, you should maintain it regularly – here you can find out how to treat your garden shed with wood stain or paint your garden shed. The BAUFIX Weather Protection Wood Gel offers reliable protection against wind and weather. If your garden shed is also exposed to a lot of sunlight, we recommend the Professional UV-Protect High-Build Stain.
Before treating with stain or gel, you should prime all exterior surfaces with a good wood preservative. This protects against blue stain and rot. You should renew a stain roughly every two years. That way your garden shed or outbuilding will remain sturdy for many years. At the latest, when the wood starts to “break through” the stain, it’s time for a new coat.
Plastic furniture – making garden furniture winterproof
While you should make wooden garden furniture winterproof, we recommend that you do not leave plastic garden furniture outside at all in winter. The cold can cause cracks in which dirt collects. Before storing them in the basement, attic or garden shed, roughly clean them with a soft brush. You can then easily remove dirt and deposits with BAUFIX Garden Furniture Cleaner: simply spray on, leave to work, wipe off with a soft cloth and finally rinse or wipe with water. When spring comes, you can look forward to clean and well-maintained garden furniture.
Winter-proofing garden furniture made of metal or polyrattan
Just like hardwood garden furniture, you also need to make metal garden furniture winterproof, as it can easily remain outdoors over winter (cushions and textiles excluded, of course). Make sure the coating has no cracks, as rust can form there over the winter. You should repair such damage with BAUFIX Metal Protective Lacquer Spray or Clear Lacquer Spray. Furniture made of aluminum and polyrattan can also remain outdoors without any problems. In fact, polyrattan should primarily be protected from the sun in summer to extend its lifespan.
